You Should Not Brush Too Hard
We have a hard enough time getting people to brush twice a day (31% of people in Wales, for example, simply don’t bother).
But how about if you are diligently standing at the sink morning and night, brushing away? The next step is to make sure that you’re doing it right!
Make sure that you’re not brushing your teeth too hard! This can damage the protective enamel coating surrounding your teeth, and cause gum recession and sensitive teeth.
I can understand the mentality. People want their teeth to be as white as possible, so they scrub and scrub hoping to get rid of stubborn stains.
But I’m here to remind you that your teeth shouldn’t be treated in the same way as your living room rug!
Scrubbing too hard is extremely bad for them; brush in small concentric circles, and do so gently! A light hand is all you need to give your teeth the brushing that you need.
An electric toothbrush can be a great tool to get you into the habit of being more gentle.
First off, people tend to lay off and let an electric toothbrush do all the work. Second, even cheap electric toothbrushes these days come with built in pressure sensors and warning lights which will let you know as soon as you are applying too much pressure.
My personal favourite is Oral-B’s Professional Care 5000; you can pick one up for under $100 and it’ll help you time your brush and make sure that you’re not giving your teeth too harsh a scrubbing!
If you’d like to see the damage that brushing too hard can do to your teeth, head over to this great post by the fine folks at Coast Dental. They (and one of their patients) have kindly shared a photograph of such damage to help educate people in the dangers of taking to their teeth with too much elbow grease!
